Situated 25 kilometres west of Suiping County, the so-called “Potted Landscape of the Central Plains” is composed of Mila Mountain, South Mountain, North Mountain and Liufeng Mountain, which are adorned with Xiumi Lake, Pipa Lake and Baihua (Hundred Flowers) Lake. It is where Wu Chen’en, author of the classical novel “Journey to the West”, lived in seclusion and obtained his inspiration, and it is one of the main outdoor filming locations of the CCTV (China Central Television) series “Journey to the West”.
Situated in Queshan County, 3 kilometres west of National Highway 107 and about 30 kilometres from Yicheng District, the so-called “Natural Ecological Park” or “Li River in the Central Plains” was chosen by CCTV’s China Television Drama Production Centre as one of the outdoor filming locations of “Journey to the West” and “The Long March”.
Tongshan Lake is a national forest park, situated 30 kilometres east of Biyang County. It is said that the Taoist priest Zhang Sanfeng came here on his travels and established a monastery, then a number of years later he travelled to Wudang Mountain, and became a Tai Chi Master.
It is called the Nanhai Zen Temple because of the nearby Xiaonanhai (small south sea), and it is situated in the southeast of Runan County, about 32 kilometres from Yicheng District. First built during the Jiajing Emperor’s reign of the Ming Dynasty, it is known in history as “one of the eight scenic spots in Cai Prefecture”, and has now become the largest temple in China and Asia. A stupa was also built in the temple thanks to a donation from Taipei Buddhist master Bai Sheng.
The so-called “artificial cavity” is situated in the northwest of Runan County, and with an area of 239 square kilometres, it is China’s largest and longest reservoir.
Situated 72 kilometres northeast of Biyang County, Baiyun Mountain is famous for its waterfalls and limestone caves, and with a height above sea level of 983 metres, it is Zhumadian’s highest peak.
Situated 10 kilometres northwest of Queshan County, the 1400-year-old temple was built in the Northern Qi Dynasty, and it is one of Henan Province’s well-known temples. A public memorial hall was built within the temple to commemorate the early Tang calligrapher, Yan Zhenqing, who was put to death by hanging that year by a rebel general, Li Xilie who ruled Huaixi Circuit, on a gingko tree inside the temple.
It is situated 32 kilometres west of Queshan County. In 1939, Liu Shaoqi and the Central Plains Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee conducted the War of Resistance against Japan in these areas. Li Xiannian, Peng Xuefeng, Zhang Zhen, Wang Guohua, the famous historian Fan Wenlan and the Chinese Fijian Buddhist economist have either fought or worked there. During the war, Zhugou Town was known as “Little Yan’an” or “Little Shanbei”. The late Premier Zhou Enlai personally inscribed the museum name, “Zhugou Memorial Museum”.
The Yang Jingyu Memorial Hall is situated 5 kilometres south of Zhumadian City, east of National Highway 107. The building work was completed on 16th January 1995, and Comrade Jiang Zemin personally inscribed the museum name.
